Sold- Patricia McCormick

Title: Sold
Author:  Patricia McCormick
Source: SYNC Audio
Series: Standalone
Rating: 4/5

Goodreads Summary:

Sold into prostitution, Lakshmi lives a nightmare and gradually forms friendships with the other girls that enable her to survive in this terrifying new world. Then the day comes when she must make a decision to risk everything for a chance to reclaim her life.

Lakshmi lives in a small village in Nepal with her mother, baby brother and her step father. She tells her step father she would like a job in the city in order to be able to send money home to her family. She believes she is getting a job with a wealthy family as a maid but she is sold into the sex traffic of India at the age of twelve.

The story follows her story from the time in the village until she reaches the city where she realizes what has happened to her. The ending is a little bitter sweet. She has been through so much and I wished that she would have found a way to escape the life before she got into it.

This story breaks my heart because children are sold into the sex traffic industry everyday and even with the preventative measures put in place and the amount of people trying to save these innocent children they are still many more who are still in the trade and have to endure unimaginable things. The part that really upsets me is the people who come to these brothels to take advantage of the children.

The narrator really captured the raw emotion of the Lakshmi and how she survived. The author does not try to cover the shame and horror these children have to endure. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading the other book I own by this author.
